Reducing our impact
As far as scientists can tell, global temperatures have varied by less than one degree since the dawn of human civilisation. This is no longer the case; from 1990 to 2100 the surface temperature is projected to increase by 1.4 to 5.8oC. The prime cause of global warming is the build up of CO2 in the atmosphere. It is the responsibility of everyone - governments, businesses and individuals - to cut CO2 emissions. Every year London alone generates around 50 million tonnes of Carbon Dioxide of which almost 20% or 10 million tonnes comes directly from transport. Everyday we make decisions that have an impact in our environment. You can choose to make that impact a positive one.
- A PC monitor on standby uses 51kWh per year of electricity, equivalent to 500 boiling kettles.
- Switching off all the PCs in a large office every night would save 65 tonnes of CO2 per year, equivalent to running the London Eye for 12.5 days.
- Lighting an average sized office overnight wastes enough energy to boil water for 1,000 cups of tea.
- London road traffic produces 2,320,000 tonnes of CO2 each year, equivalent to a jumbo jet flying to the moon and back 71 times.
- Replacing old cooling and heating equipment with Energy Star qualified models can cut annual energy costs by 20%.
- The extra CO2 produced of running an air-conditioned office is equivalent to producing almost 900 million A4 sheets of paper.
- 87 million tonnes of solid waste goes to landfill each year. Waste typically costs companies 4.5% of turnover.
