Driver Delivers Early

On the 12th of January 2006 David Sherrin (Q083) got more than he bargained for when he picked up a client and his pregnant wife from St John’s Wood Road. It was clear the client’s wife was in labour and the destination was St Mary’s Hospital.

David got as far as Lisson Grove when he heard a loud scream from the back of the cab. It appeared her labour was a little more advanced than was first thought and the baby was well and truly on its way.

An Ambulance was called, but it was up to the father-to-be and David to deliver the child into the world in the back of David’s cab! The midwife arrived and gave the new mother an injection and David wrapped the new arrival in towels provided by passers by.

David said that he has been on the circuit since 1960 and has never experienced anything so lovely and so emotional. He went on to say that if everyone was as nice and helpful as all the people that assisted that morning, the world would be a better place.

Radio Taxis Sponsors Walker

Radio Taxis sponsored driver John Lewis, to the tune of £150 when he took part in the East London Walking Festival on 2nd October 2005. Joined by his wife Lynn and four friends, they raised funds for the King of Hearts Cardiac Support Group.

The money will go to King George Hospital in Illford as they need to raise £4000 to pay for a new defibrillator. Following two heart attacks, John took up exercise and has been following a healthier lifestyle. Having given up smoking and losing over two stone in weight, he is now determined to set a good example.

about usDisneyland Paris Diary Piece

The eleventh annual pilgrimage to Disneyland Paris took place on 23rd September 2005, and once again the efforts and professionalism of the organising committee paid off with a great day out for everyone.

Each one of the 94 drivers made scheduled pick-ups at various London hospitals at 6.15am. Meeting the children, their families and the nurses is one the most heart-warming moments of the trip for the drivers. Everyone is so excited, and with big smiles all round its off to the Cabot Hall in Canary Warf for breakfast with the Lord Mayor Alderman Michael Savroy. At 8.30am the Mayor gave the signal to depart for Disneyland Paris by cutting the ribbon at the front of the four-mile long convoy.

about usOn the way to Dover people lined the footbridges crossing the motorway to wave us on our way. “Its like being a member of royalty” said one of the girls. We boarded the ferry at the port of Dover and arrived an hour and half later in Calais. There was still a long drive to the resort and we made it just in time for the evening meal. After dinner it was bedtime but who’d be able to sleep? Even a 7.00am wake up call couldn’t have come soon enough for most of the children. The sun was shining on us in the morning and the well-loved Disney characters were out in force. After the token photographs with the children’s favourite characters it was on to the infamous rides. As the children approached a ride they wanted to go on, their hearts sank at the site of the winding long queue. As if by magic, one of the hosts produced a “VIP Get Up Front” card and it was happy days for all the kids.

about usThe Disneyland parade finished off a wonderful day, the themed floats depicted Disney productions throughout the ages from Steamboat Willie to the Little Mermaid. The excitement didn’t stop there, after returning to the hotel to freshen up we were invited back to the park under exclusive access for dinner. We had a great meal with Mickey and Minny, and in true Disney style every one of the children (and a few of the adults) got a big hug. DJ Jamie Owens played some brilliant tunes after the meal and we all danced until the “piece de resistance” - the firework display, it can only be described as magical.

The annual weekend away is one of the most rewarding and well-organised trips the Taxi trade is involved in. Without the hard work and dedication of the committee, drivers, emergency services and other volunteers this trip would not be possible. The joy it brings to the children and their families may only be for the weekend, but the memories last forever.

We would like to thank the organising committee:
