London 2012: Training begins for volunteers.

Wembley Arena to host first session

Thousands of recruits will descend on London to commence their training as Games Maker volunteers.

About 70,000 people have been selected to help both visitors and competitors in London and around the UK during the Olympics and Paralympics .

The ten thousand of them coming to Wembley this weekend will be the first to find out their duties.

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (Locog) are still interviewing for the roles with selection going on until April

Former World Champion rower and Olympic medallist Sarah Winckless will join Locog chief executive Paul Deighton and athletics legend Lord Coe at the launch of the event.

Locog is calling it the biggest volunteer campaign since World War II with Games Makers charged with "making London 2012 happen".

Volunteer Gillian Douglas said "The phrase Locog uses a lot is that the Games Makers will be the friendly faces of the Games and if we can be that wherever we are in the country, whatever time of day and night we can, it creates a good impression of the people of our country."

Training will be split into three sessions. The first is the orientation event where volunteers will get an insight into the history of the Games, sports and venues.

The next step is role-specific sessions where people will learn all they need to carry out their allotted tasks.

Finally, at the venue-specific training session people will go to the venue they will be stationed at, learn about emergency procedures and meet other volunteers they will be working with.

Other cities hosting training events include Manchester, Glasgow, and Newcastle..

More than 200,000 people applied to be Games Makers, with 100,000 being interviewed.

The Olympics take place between July 27th and August 12th with the Paralympics starting on August 29th and ending on September 9th.

Upbeat figures for US jobless

243,000 new US jobs in January

A higher than expected number of jobs were created in the USA last month.

The near quarter of a million new jobs is the highest total for nine months and exceeds the 150,000 predicted by analysts.

Unemployment dropped to 8.3% which is the lowest since 2009.

Share prices rose after news of the job growth and the Dow Jones hitting its highest point since May 2008.

The Nasdaq index showed it's best score since December 2000.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index rose to it's highest level since July last year and Germany's Dax and France's Cac 40 were also up.

It is not all good news however, with a report from the US Congressional Budget Office, forecast that unemployment would climb to nearly 9% in the last three months of this year and peak at 9.2% early next year.

The job growth has been widespread, with large gains in business services, leisure and hospitality, and manufacturing.

There were nearly 11,000 jobs in the retail industry and engineering and accountancy also showed growth.

Factories added 50,000 workers, much more than expected and a one-year high.

Lindsey Piegza, economist at FTN Financial, said: "It was a better-than-expected report, the strongest report that we've seen in quite some time".

The figures add to a range of data pointing to a gradual US economic recovery.

On Friday, the US Institute for Supply Management said its services index rose to 56.8 last month and it's new orders index was up nearly five percent from December.

Unemployment and the economy has been the dominant issue in election year and although President Obama will be pleased at the news he is likely to have more jobless voters than any other post-war president.

Herbert Hoover lost the 1932 election in the middle of the Great Depression when joblessness stood at 23.6% while Franklin Roosevelt faced joblessness rates of 16.9% and 14.6% in two of his elections while in the White House and won both.

One of the world's largest insurance companies, AON is moving its corporate headquarters to London in a relocation which is likely to yield tens of millions of pounds in tax revenues for the UK Treasury.

Britain kisses goodbye to mouth to mouth

British Heart Foundation: "Ignore kiss of life"

The British Heart Foundation is urging people to forget "mouth-to-mouth" and to concentrate on chest compressions when performing CPR.

A new advertising campaign featuring Vinnie Jones is promoting the use of "hands only" resuscitation.

It is a response to polling by the BHF which found many people were worried about giving the kiss of life with over half those questioned admitting they were put off because they lacked knowledge.

Four in 10 people were worried about being sued if they did something wrong, even though the BHF argues no such case has ever succeeded in Britain

Ellen Mason, senior cardiac nurse from the BHF said "The kiss of life can be daunting for untrained bystanders who want to help when someone has collapsed with a cardiac arrest."

The advert has as its soundtrack Stayin' Alive by the Bee Gees which has been suggested as a tune for would be life savers to hum to get the tempo of chest compressions. Others have suggested this may lead to the compressions being too shallow.

Vinnie Jones, now an actor after a successful football career, said "Hands only CPR should give have-a-go heroes the confidence to step in when somebody is in cardiac arrest."

Around thirty thousand people have a cardiac arrest each year in the UK and half of those are witnessed.

"In most of these cases no one acts and people panic," said Ms Mason "If it was us, we would all want our loved ones and ourselves to be saved, wouldn't we?"

91.2% of Radio Taxis drivers will work during the Olympics

Londons best taxi company, Radio Taxis will be working in the Summer of 2012

Amid claims and counter claims about the London taxi industry and further to reports that taxi drivers will not be working during London's 2012 Summer Olympics, Radio Taxis decided to poll its 2,500 strong taxi fleet.

Around 27% of the fleet responded to the (online) survey (a poll of more than 100 is usually sufficient for a meaningful conclusion) and of the 675 drivers who responded 91.2% said they would work and only 8.8% said they would not.

This flies in the face of reports in the media about "grumpy cab drivers" who "won't work because of being excluded from the ORN lanes."

Radio Taxis Chairman and CEO Geoffrey Riesel said, "I am very proud of my drivers. Radio drivers have always been the most committed in the industry."

London taxidriver publishes book of passengers favourite quotes and sayings

The Evening Standard reported on a cab driver who asked passengers for their favourite quotes and proverbs, and with them has published a book with 400 of the best.

The book, "Black Cab Wisdom'' written by Mark Solomon, is undergoing a 10,000-copy reprint after the first 5,000 sold out.

Solomon said he started writing down passengers' favourite quotes on scrap paper but then he started leaving a clipboard in the back of the cab. Solomon has been driving for 12 years. "Cab driving itself has restored my faith in London,'' he said.

"There are so many good people out there. They may have done a 12-hour demanding day but they're still prepared to give me the time of day."

London's famous and iconic black cabs have been voted yet again the world's best taxis.

Almost 5,000 world-wide visitors and tourists from around 23 countries were surveyed by Hotels.com, with London's taxis along with their knowledgeable drivers coming out ahead of everyone including New York's yellow cabs.

London was top in five of the seven categories voted on, including safety, friendliness, cleanliness, quality of driving and knowledge of the area.

Although Bangkok's cabs offered the best value for money, in the survey, at the same time their drivers were also voted as being the very worst in the world.

London taxidrivers have bigger brains - says study

A new study shows that the structure of a London taxi driver's brain changes while they are studying for The Knowledge.

Dozens of trainee drivers had MRI scans before and after they memorized hundreds of journeys and street names.

The University College London team found brain parts linked to memory grew bigger and said it proved the brain could adapt to new tasks, even in adulthood. Compared with similar scans from non-taxi drivers, those who had attempted the Knowledge had increased the size of the posterior hippocampus - the rear section of the hippocampus which lies at the front of the brain.

We have seen similar studies come out in the past, and they always receive significant press attention. This week, there were articles on the BBC, in the Mirror and U.S. News and World Report.

One year countdown to Olympics marked in London

Newly completed Aquatic Centre hosts celebration

With just a year to go to the start of the 2012 Olympics, synchronised swimmers formed the number "1" in the pool at the Stratford location which will be used for the aquatic events during the games. IOC chairman Jacques Rogge and Lord Coe were the guests of honour at the site. Olympic diver tom Daley was the first to dive into the pool which was only completed last week.

The committee announced that all of the permanent venues were now finished.

Elsewhere, the Prime Minister, met workers on Horse Guards Parade where the beach volleyball will be held.

Later tonight there will be an event where London Mayor Boris Johnson will formally invite the rest of the world to come to the capital for next years sporting festival. There will also be a concert featuring pop group The Feeling and DJ Kissy Sell Out.

Royal Mail will be issuing special gold medal stamps to celebrate any winners from Team GB and Lord Coe reported that over a quarter of a million people had applied to be volunteers during the games.

The Met has said that in spite of the recent resignations of two of its senior officers the force is prepared for the security operation and the plans are "robust"

Transport for London has advised commuters to work from home or use different routes for the duration of the Olympics due to the expected increase in capacity on transport systems

Boost for UK economy: Aon moves HQ to London

One of the world's largest insurance companies, AON is moving its corporate headquarters to London in a relocation which is likely to yield tens of millions of pounds in tax revenues for the UK Treasury.

Aon, which is the main sponsor of the Manchester United football club, has declared that the move would bring it closer to the London insurance market and it would also give the Insurance giant a greater access to emerging markets.

Manchester United has the largest following across the globe of any sports team in the world.

AON have also expressed that they believe the move will bring it closer to the London insurance market, which AON has described as "one of the key international hubs of insurance and risk brokerage".

Aon has a market capitalisation of £9.7bn and is a specialist in insurance broking and in employee benefits.

The knowledge of London, to become a London taxi driver, is it harder than its ever been?

(Euston Film's "The Knowledge" by the late Jack Rosenthal)

Geoffrey Riesel, Radio Taxis Group Chairman & CEO writes...

It takes one year to become a commercial pilot, but four years to become a taxi driver - unless this problem is addressed the trade will wither on the vine.
London is a wonderful place for business and for its quality of life. It can be argued that London is now the world’s top city. Our restaurants are better than ever, our entertainment venues and theatres are unsurpassed but most importantly our business network and financial institutions are unequalled.
London is as good as its gets.

"No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford," said writer Samuel Johnson. He was not wrong.

Naturally we complain about our transport infrastructure and about the traffic, we’re British, it’s our role in life. Even so have you been to Paris recently, have you seen how bad the traffic is there? Needless to say Paris has the famous Metro, but the Tube is regularly praised too, especially by visitors to London, so it may not be quite as ’bad’ as we think and it is improving along with the buses. New York is also a great city but the traffic; well it’s as bad or possibly even worse.

Benchmark

One feature that makes London so ’liveable’, everyone would agree is that in London we have the very best taxis and the very best taxi drivers in the world. Getting into a London cab is accepted to be the next best thing to having arrived at your destination. That you will, without a doubt, get there safe and sound. That you will rarely, if ever, have to suffer the stress of needing to tell the driver what to do or where to go as you would often be required to do in New York.

Around the world the international taxi associations with which I have had the privilege of being involved look at London’s taxi industry as being the ’Rolls Royce’ of the business, the benchmark, the silver service, the very best - and yes we should be proud.

What a bombshell it would be to uncover the possibility that yet another of the UK PLC’s symbolic industries was in real danger of drifting into oblivion; surely that couldn’t be so?

At the risk of becoming the messenger who gets shot, I’m afraid that is a clear prospect. Worse, the alarming possibility which looms large is that when the Olympics Games come to town in 2012 our taxi industry could be too feeble and marginalised to play any serious part in the spectrum of London’s transport infrastructure. So how can that be, how could it have happened?

Over the last few years London’s famous taxi trade has diminished in size. In fact TfL statistics show that we have an ageing population of taxi drivers. There are more drivers over the age of 75 years than there are under 25 years. There are more drivers over 70, than there are under 30. So what is happening, why and what could be done about it, if anything?

Most Londoners will have heard of the famous ’Knowledge of London’, this is the long-drawn-out series of tests which trainee taxi drivers have to complete satisfactorily (along with criminal record checks and of course a bespoke driving assessment) before they can ply for hire in one of the famous, iconic vehicles.

If we look back a little more than 30 years ago, candidates for the knowledge, who decided to throw themselves into studying to become a taxi driver, took something like an average of 11 months. This was to complete the syllabus of routes, landmarks and buildings and be tested to the satisfaction of the Public Carriage Office (PCO) examiners, who were tasked with the job of examining London’s budding cabbies.

It was never easy, it took hard work going out on a moped learning all those routes and points and committing them entirely to memory. Indeed the majority of candidates always dropped out in the first three months. Despite this the taxi trade grew by a few per cent every year not quite meeting the growth in demand caused by greater personal affluence in the capital. It could also be argued that this was why the Mini Cab became so popular, demand inevitably becomes fulfilled.

The PCO examiners were mainly expolicemen and over a period of years it became ever more difficult to recruit these examiners.
As a consequence of the lack of examiners by the 1980’s there was a log jam of candidates so the testing methodology was changed. Rather than asking candidates to return regularly for tests, they were asked to go away, to do the whole syllabus and then apply for testing after two years.

Only no-one told the examiners (or so it would seem). They carried on testing in the old approach and consequently the time it took to pass through the whole system grew and grew to the point in 2004 where it was taking an average of 52 months for a candidate to get through the system.

By this time all of the examiners were now taxi drivers themselves and spurred on by the drivers association whose policy is one of open protectionism, the examiners felt it to be their solemn duty to make the landmarks and points so hard and so obscure so as to slow up the progress of new entrants to the industry.

It takes an average of four years or more to become a taxi driver, who on earth would subject themselves to that? It takes less than a year to become a commercial pilot. Well it would seem predictably, that many less people than we would want are applying to become taxi drivers, in fact the numbers of those applying is all but collapsing.

The knock on effect is that older drivers naturally work less and don’t want to work unsocial hours, thus a key criterion of the service is diminished and of course the numbers of taxis and drivers is beginning to drop.

To be fair to the PCO they have begun to identify the problem (after many years of lobbying by some of us) and have come up with a pilot program, fiddling at the edges, to modernise the testing methodology. Where they have done so, as you would have thought, candidates have passed out more quickly. But the wheels of change move very slowly and the pilot scheme only includes a small sample.

Let us be clear, the existing standard is superb and must not be diluted, but delivery of that standard does not have to take four and a half years. It can be done by a committed candidate in one year, which would attract potential new high grade candidates back to the industry. A modernisation of the testing bureaucracy (rather than a change in the excellent syllabus) or better yet a complete outsourcing of the examination process to academia would be the appropriate route.

The PCO is a regulator; it should not be the regulator's responsibility for delivery of the examination service, its role should merely be to scrutinize and ensure the maintenance of standards, which is what we all want.

TfL, who are responsible now for the PCO, are aware of the solutions, they are just moving very slowly. They are also somewhat fearful of a vociferous drivers association and of the political fall out, because many taxi drivers now erroneously believe, as a consequence of the protectionist strap line which is that a change would ’flood London with Taxi drivers’ - a statement which is patently untrue.

London needs a steady growth and regeneration of an intrinsically first class industry. Every trade needs new young blood to prevent it from withering on the vine otherwise it will end up with just what the protectionists don’t want - the complete abandonment of the trades’ high standards. Otherwise the new norm would be much like New York’s taxi drivers who are also famous, but for quite a different reason.

Geoffrey Riesel is chairman of Radio Taxis Group Limited; international Directorof the US-based Taxicab Limousine and Paratransit Association and chairman of the European Radio Taxi Association. He is also a member of the Council and former Board Director of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Fourth year in succession: Survey - London Taxis are best in the world - Hotels.com

Mini cab claims of "35% cheaper than taxis" are false

Radio Taxis Group Chairman and CEO maintains, there is solid evidence that claims by leading Mini Cab companies to be "at least 35% cheaper on average than taxis" are completely false and designed to mislead the public.

Riesel said evidence has been exposed that firms involved in these spurious claims were typically found to be quoting "low rates per mile charges" but were "systematically overstating mileages and extras."

These car companies whole charging systems are based on what they can get away with and may become the object of an investigation by UK or EU competition laws. Failure to comply with UK or EU competition law can have very serious consequences.

Firms involved in anti-competitive behaviour may find their agreements to be unenforceable and risk being fined up to 10% of group global turnover for particularly damaging behaviour as well as exposing themselves to possible damages actions from customers. Furthermore, individuals could also find themselves facing director disqualification orders or even criminal sanctions for serious breaches of competition law (see OUT-LAW's guide to Anti-competitive behaviour under the Enterprise Act).

Riesel went on to say that most Mini Cab companies, even the biggest of them offer inferior service and can't compete with the licensed taxi industry's professionalism. The company owners regularly bemoan the fact that their mini cab drivers "are clueless."

Mini Cab companies by and large use drivers who don't know where they are going, time and again can't find destinations and these "amateurish drivers" frequently struggle to find the pick up address because, basically, they are lost in London.

Riesel concluded by saying

"The majority of these companies feel that the only way they can sell their services is to give the impression that they offer a much cheaper service, when by and large they do not. It is a sharp practice endemic in the Mini Cab business"
